Position: senior software engineer in the UNIX environment

Duration: 8+ Months

Location: Saint Paul, Minnesota

Rate: Open

 

Prefer: Locals (F2F)

 

Client: Thomson Financial

 

Description:

Project Summary and Position Overview: (A detailed description of the Project and what the Position entails must be included)

The qualified individual will be part of a team developing fixed income information and analytics products. The team is responsible for enabling the core infrastructure for fixed income reference data, used by internal and external Thomson Reuters content clients worldwide.  Successful applicant will be responsible for the design, implementation, QA, documentation, production release, and ongoing support and maintenance of systems consisting of web applications, automated processes and databases.  This position is part of an initiative to make major improvements to fixed income data and infrastructure. This is the same group as the previous St. Paul openings but while the other project and arm was re-distributing the content, this arm is the 1st point of content. The position is approved through the end of the year but extension through 2010 is possible.

 

Essential Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

Candidate will be working as a senior software engineer in the Unix environment.  Primary skills used will be Perl, Sybase, SQL and general Unix utilities.  The successful candidate may work on any number of projects that may include:  writing data entry web pages, creating new automated data feeds, working with data analysts to define new QA tools, refactoring data flow processes, performing support of existing tools,  performing bugfixes, and prototyping new systems on new hardware.  The position will work with staff in multiple locations including St. Paul, New York, Beijing and Bangalore

 

Additional Information: (e.g. Shift Resource, % work that is development vs. maintenance, etc.)

 There will be a 30 minute phone screen and then an in-person interview that would last around 4 hours (both technical and non-technical).

 

Qualification:

Education:

Bachelors degree in computer science or related field or equivalent experience.

 

Required Skills (Must have), Necessary industry Experience & associated number of years of experience:

Demonstrated experience in all phases from design to release of production systems.  Strong analytic thinking skills.  6+ years programming preferably in Perl, C, C++

SQL (any variant) experience (5+ years experience would be a HUGE plus)

2+ years experience with UNIX or Linux variant.

 

 

Desired Skills (Nice to have in addition to the Required Skills), Necessary industry Experience & associated number of years of experience:

 

Familiarity with agile development techniques beneficial. Optional languages:  XML, HTML, Java, Python, Ruby. Optional products: Sybase SQL Server, Apache, modperl, Mason, CGI, Augosys, Bugzilla, Wiki, CVS
